Ad Aspect Ratio Guide: 9:16 vs. 1:1 vs. 16:9
Rexran Guides
The same ad concept can need three different exports depending on where it runs. Producing the wrong ratio for a placement means letterboxing, cropped-out product, or wasted spend on an asset the platform barely shows. Here's how to prioritize.
9:16 — vertical, full-screen
Instagram and Facebook Reels, TikTok, Stories. This is where most DTC video budgets are spent today, because it's the native format for the placements with the highest volume of inventory. If you're only producing one size to start, this is almost always the right first choice.
1:1 — square
Still a reliable, safe size for in-feed placements on Facebook and Instagram outside of Stories/Reels. It doesn't have the same reach as vertical anymore, but it remains a solid universal fallback that displays cleanly across older feed placements and some retargeting inventory.
16:9 — horizontal
YouTube in-stream, some desktop feed placements, and connected TV. Less critical for a mobile-first brand's first campaign, but necessary once you expand into YouTube ads or CTV, where a vertical crop looks visibly wrong.
A practical rule of thumb
If budget or timeline is limited, produce 9:16 first — it covers the largest share of typical DTC ad inventory. Add 1:1 once you're running broader feed placements, and only invest in 16:9 when a specific platform (YouTube, CTV) is actually part of your media plan. Producing all three for every concept from day one is rarely worth it until a concept has proven it converts.
